History
The site of Pasha Bwiru is on the Southern shores of Lake Victoria, where the granite rocks cascade into the Lake. Thirty years ago it was a barren area with wonderful views, few houses and stumps of trees that had been cut down for firewood. In 1998 the local council identified three plots that would be suitable for a hotel, or hospitality venue, and these became Pasha Bwiru. The site was adjacent to a small fishing village, which looked similar to Cornish smuggling coves, and was only accessible by foot across a switchback path around 2kms from the nearest road. The first plot was purchased for just over £100. The fishing village was moved by the council to a more convenient location and the second plot was purchased for $20,000 from a fisherman, who relocated his family to a better home. The third plot was acquired in 2019 providing the site for the building of the Pasha hotel.
Environment
The owners of Pasha favours slow progress towards a vision that includes the environment, the local community and building skills of the workforce. During this time, trees have been planted and other local trees allowed to regenerate. A large shamba (farm) was created, with a banana plantation, fruit trees and an organic vegetable patch. Space has been set aside for the water otters, monitor lizards, mongoose families and rock hyrax. These live in the large spaces between the granite boulders and come out to feed and swim when undisturbed. The birds at Pasha are amazing, with Fish Eagles commanding the lake views, Red Kite gliding past the windows and verandas, Kingfishers and cormorants diving into the lake for fish. At night thousands of lights show where the boats with fishermen are.
Vision
Pasha is not just about a hotel and place for visitors and guests to relax and chill out. Of course, hotel guests are important – the customer is King!, but we have other interlocking values. The environment is our family home and we want to preserve their habitat. The staff are building their work and careers around Pasha, so paying fair wages, and we take their views on the way we work seriously. The society and culture around Bwiru embraces the way that people live and work. The final priority is for Pasha to contribute to the Tanzanian economy through investment, payment of taxes and support for the local economy. To that end we source our food, fruit and vegetables locally. Many of our fruits are grown in our shamba where we use organic methods, with no artificial fertilizers.
